Dalai Lama Speaks Up for Animal Rights

Posted on 20 February 2010 by admin

The Dalai Lama has joined the many protesters against animal cruelty in Catalunya. The Tibetan religious official has appealed to the catalan parliament stating the practice of bullfighting is a is a “Cruel practice which inflicts atrocious pain in a public way on innocent and sentient animals.”

The bullfight ban has already been primarily accepted by the Catalan parliament.

The Canary Islands banned bullfighting in 1991, but until now no region on the Spanish mainland has outlawed the outdated practice, in spite of many of the municipalities issuing bans.

Protesters came from as far away as the UK during the debate whether to ban bullfighting in Lloret de Mar back in 2004. Eventually mayor Xavier Crespo and his CIU party agreed to ban the outdated and unpopular espectacle, sadly not because of animal cruelty issues but because the party saw no ‘financial interest’ to continue the weekly summer massacres.
