Airspace Open Again

Posted on 22 April 2010

UK airspace re-opened yesterday, 21st April after a week of no flights in or out of the country. Thousands of stranded tourists now at least have a new flight booked to bring them home, with promises of reimbursement of expenditure during the days of disruption.

British Airports Authority has announced all flights to resume as scheduled, but passengers should be prepared for delays or even further cancellations due to overloads on Air Traffic Control.

There also remains the possibility of more volcanic eruptions, causing a repeat of problems, although airlines are insisting the government were too rash in ordering a blanket cancellation of all flights, saying they could have tested certain flight paths before deciding if it were safe to fly.

Costa Brava Flights

Posted on 18 April 2010

Tens of thousands of tourists are still stranded on the Costa Brava due to the eruption of the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull.

The tourists mainly from Britain and Germany have no hope of leaving the area before Monday, as Airline Ryanair have stated the earliest flight may possible be reinstated on Monday at 1pm, however, as the cloud is still completely covering the UK, and much of the rest of Europe, this looks unlikely.

From the Ryanair website:

Ryanair, confirmed that based on current meteorological forecasts, and the continuing emission of volcanic ash into the atmosphere over Iceland, it has decided to cancel all scheduled flights to/from the UK, Ireland, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Belgium, Holland, Northern France, Northern Germany, Poland and the Baltic States until 1300hrs on Mon 19 April. This advice is based on the current stable weather trends which continue to blow potentially dangerous volcanic ash across the British Isles, Scandinavia and the Northern European coastline.

This decision has been taken by Ryanair in order to allow passengers to apply for a full refund or rebook onto flights operating later next week, when Ryanair hopes that improved weather conditions may allow normal flight services to resume. Ryanair is anxious to give intending passengers as much information as possible, as far in advance as possible, to allow them to make alternative arrangements. Ryanair continues to post regular flight information updates on the flight information page on www.ryanair.com.

Passengers who have called the airline, have been advised to make their way to Girona airport from today in order to re-schedule flights. Due to the immense backlog, many passengers are likely to be stranded for up to another week.

Barça Back on Top

Posted on 10 April 2010

Barcelona  F C are back at the top of la Liga this week, after soundly beating Real Madrid 0-2 at the Bernabeu.

Goals from Messi and Pedro gave the Catalan club the victory, and let them reclaim their spot at the top, after weeks of second place behind Madrid; even though they had the same number of points, Madrid edged ahead on goal difference.

Today’s match opened the gap again, leaving Barça once more on course to win both la Liga and Champions’ league.

La Liga – Still no Change at Top

Posted on 28 March 2010

Both Barcelona and Real Madrid won their matches this weekend, leaving them still level on points at the top of the table, but with Real Madrid ahead on goals. Barcelona won 0-1 in Mallorca on Saturday, while Madrid played host to Athletico Madrid on Sunday and won 3-2. Still everything to play for after game 29 of La Liga.

Valencia remain in 3rd place, with several teams packed very close together fighting for 4th.

Catalunya Reconnected

Posted on 28 March 2010

Catalunya is finally back on mains power; three weeks after the freak storm that took out pylons all over the area, the last towns and villages have had their power restored, and the last of the generators driven away.

Many people were taken ill and ambulances called during the problems, and several kept in hospital, with most problems coming from faulty gas or oil heaters. Others had accidents in the dark, but no one was very seriously hurt.

Now the insurance companies start to settle claims for food spoiled in fridges and freezers during the problems. The electricity companies are still facing enquiries into how it all happened.
