Snow Brings Costa Brava to a Standstill

Posted on 08 March 2010 by admin

Heavy snow fell in Lloret de Mar this morning, the first time in almost 30 years.

The village is surrounded by mountains, so is normally protected from snow. Strong winds and rain were the first to attack the town, soon followed by a swirling snow storm.

Although at first it seemed the ground was too wet for the snow to settle, life in the town was quickly disrupted, as schools closed, along with nearby railway lines and main roads.

The children of Lloret de Mar have never yet seen snow here, and were excited by the sight.

The urbanisations of Lloret, on mainly on route to Girona, fared worse, as the snow lay thick and many residents were snowed in, unable to move vehicles.

The whole of Catalunya is under ‘Orange Alert’ weather warnings, as the area is not prepared for this kind of weather.
